Russian composer and pianist Sergei Prokofiev was born in in Sontsovka, a small village in Ukraine. Early on, it was clear that he had musical talent. His mother, who was a very good pianist, encouraged him, and taught him to play the piano.

Sergei began composing at the age of five. Here, he worked and learned the piano and other instruments under the auspices of renowned composers such as Alexander Winkler, Nikolai Tcherepnin and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. All through the early s, Prokofiev had been experimenting with a wide variety of genres, one of which was ballet music. While he may have succeeded in a number of other music compositions, Prokofiev always seem to have a hard time with ballet music, with the likes of Chout becoming subject to intense modifications in the s.

During this time, he worked on his first symphony, The Classical , which never premiered properly due to complications from war. Another change for Prokofiev was the different environments he was now being exposed to, but he settled well in America where he began work on another successful opera, The Love of Three Oranges. Instead he went back to Russia to work on Alexander Nevsky. When he returned his passport was confiscated and he never travelled again.

In he suffered an aneurism which left him unable to work for long stretches throughout the rest of his life. How his deteriorating health affected his music we will probably never know.

But there is a new depth and darkness to his best works of this time. Time and again he produced great and enduring themes. In his very last years he was hounded by show trials for deviating from the party line in music.

Yet he continued to find his own way, even in the apparent simplicity of the Seventh Symphony —52 , a very different work from its two large-scale predecessors.
