Around 12 months-ago, Albee Layer took a heavy Jaws lip to the head. Queue a severe concussion, a whole load of issues associated with it and a long path to semi recovery. But on Wednesday, Albee returned to the wave so synonymous with his name, ended up scoring a couplea kegs, as you can see from the shot above, and called it a day.
The range of emotions going back to a war zone that has caused so much grief are vast and nuanced, especially on the first major swell of the season. And as Mr Layer decompressed from what just happened, we checked in to talk nerves, getting back out there and a seemingly more mellow vibe that what we're used to at Jaws.
First up, walk us through the morning and evening before this Jaws swell? How were the nerves? I haven't felt that nervous before a swell since I was towing as a teenager. It didn't stop when I got back out there either, once I caught my first wave i felt a bit better. About a year ago I had the lip land on me at jaws. It gave me a really bad concussion and I have been dealing with problems ever since.
I got back in the water pretty quick, missed a couple swells but still don't feel the same I did and probably never will. It wasn't some magical cure all for the changes that happened in my brain. I have all the issues I had before the swell, as far as my brain goes. Who were your crew and what was the drive down there like?
This swell was special because I got to have my girlfriend come out with me. What is it like growing up on the Valley Isle? At a young age, you learn outdoor skills.
That cool rootsy stuff, you know, country vibes. Having a rootsy skillset is really cool. Not many people can say that. I never learned how to surf crowds or really good waves for that matter. In a way, I really like it. What about the genesis of your surfing?
Was it just natural for you to take to the water growing up on Maui? Yeah, it was a natural thing. My parents were windsurfing when I was a baby, so I grew up at the beach. Naturally, that turned into playing in the shorebreak, and then they would take me out surfing on the front of their board. That was a huge turning point. Up to then, I was only making a few hundred dollars a month from sponsors, and was thinking about getting a real job and giving up the whole dream. Once Matt Meola won the first year, everyone rallied behind me to do it the following year.
When I won, I was so relieved, just so stoked. He told me that even Dave Rastovich won the World Juniors before he became a freesurfer. I almost gave up before that. Those are all well established names in the surf industry, and all for different pillars of the sport. In the group, one guy is better in small waves, another in big waves…to try and be better than everyone in our group is a high standard. Did they help push you to try for the backside ?
